Bergbaumuseum

Stadtschlaining, Goberling 118

Remember
Goberling, like the entire area around Stadtschlaining, has been a mining region for ages. Already in the times of Andreas Baumkircher, the founder of the city of Schlaining, various ores were mined in the 15th century. Mining was once an important industry in Burgenland. Antimony was mined in the area around Goberling for more than 200 years. The discovery of the antimony deposits is dated 1744. Antimony was used in industry, for example for brake pads, but also in medicine. At that time, the focus was on iron, copper and silver. The actual mining began in the middle of the 19th century. In its heyday, the antimony mine in Goberling employed about 160 workers. A whole region lived from and with mining. In 1990 the mine was closed for economic reasons. Today nothing is left of the coal and antimony mines. The museum in Goberling preserves the memory of the local mining industry. The last remains of mining tools and various other memorabilia have found a place in the old Goberlinger Kühlhaus. The collection gives an insight and overview of the work in the mountain, which was a very hard one. The Goberling Mining Museum shows the narrowness and hardship of underground mining in a reconstructed exhibition gallery (built by former miners). Numerous original pieces give an insight into the miners' everyday life. Old models of miner's lamps as they were in use long ago and the most important tools: Heart shovel, bolt fork, mallet and of course the wrecking iron. In addition, gallery plans and display boards show the history of antimony mining. The numerous tools and small devices give an idea of the physical hard work of the miners. Information and registration: in all inns in Goberling and in the tourist office Stadtschlaining Guided tours from 10 persons
